Saturn Develops Fuel Efficient HCCI Prototype
Saturn has manufactured the world's first driveable vehicle prototype equipped with a homogeneous-charge compression-
ignition (HCCI) gasoline engine. Power to the Aura model is provided by a production 2.2L Ecotec 4-cylinder powerplant
modified for a combination of both HCCI and conventional sparkignition operating modes. HCCI is a lean-mixture combustion
process that combines the low emissions and low-cost aftertreatment equipment benefits associated with gasoline with the low
fuel consumption benefit of diesel, offering a 15 to 20 percent increase in fuel economy when applied to a gasoline engine.
GM plans to road-test similar multimode engines configured to use conventional spark-ignition mode from start-up to 1000
rpm, HCCI mode between 1000 and 3000 rpm and spark-ignition mode again at 3000 rpm and up.

Bar Magnets Capture More Particles
Spencer R. Anderson, PDM Tech, TLNA, advises using bar magnets to capture particles in large plant equipment with
accessible openings inside the gear box or reservoir. "Although magnetic plugs are good, they will not always capture all
metal particles," says Anderson. "We have found that between sampling, filter changes and filtering that bar magnets capture
a large amount of wear debris that may accumulate from large equipment with pinions and bull gears. When a large amount of
wear metal is found, we know that we may have a problem and can correct it before it causes more damage."

Reliable Cold Weather ATV Operation
Cold temperature preventive maintenance ensures ATVs run at peak performance throughout the winter riding season.
While motorcycle, scooter, boat and jet ski owners in northern climates have packed away their equipment until spring,
ATVs provide owners with year-round recreational and work opportunities. However, ATVs operated in cold winter climates
require special attention to ensure reliable operation throughout the season.
|
When conventional lubricants get cold, they tend to thicken and sacrifice wear protection, while synthetic
motor oils maintain their viscosities in cold temperatures.
|
Owners traveling long distances at high speeds may wish to contact their ATV dealers regarding jetting requirements.
Because cold air is denser than warm air and has higher oxygen content, a richer fuel mixture is required to prevent piston
damage. In addition, check into whether gasoline antifreeze is recommended for the ATV and ensure the air filter is clean.
If the ATV is equipped with a heated carburetor, have a dealer inspect its operation.
When conventional lubricants get cold, they tend to thicken and sacrifice wear protection, while synthetic motor oils
maintain their viscosities in cold temperatures. "Synthetic oils do not need to be confined to the engine and transmission,"
says Randy Hall of MX Performance. "Differentials will also benefit from the characteristics of synthetic gear oils
especially in the cold weather."
Grease the steering and suspension linkage to remove dirt and water contaminants, and inspect driveline and CV boots to
avoid problems with freezing water. Drum brake seals should also be inspected to be sure they are in place, ensuring drums
don't fill with water and freeze. Brake fluid can also become contaminated with water and freeze in cold weather. If the
brake fluid has not been changed in the last five years, it may be time to change it.
Because a cold engine requires more electrical energy to turn over, and because a battery's chemical action slows in cold
weather, winter is an especially trying time for an ATV's electrical system. Using the winch as a lift for a plow system
taxes the electrical system even further.
If an ATV's battery is between 3-5 years old, have it checked or replaced. It is also a good idea to check the charging
system. Ensure the battery terminals are clean and tight, and make sure the battery's electrolyte level is at the proper
height.
In liquid-cooled machines, it is important to ensure the concentration of antifreeze is at the correct level. Temperature
protection should be lower than the lowest temperature the operator expects to ride in during the season. Check the
condition of the hoses and radiator as well.
Finally, before hitting the trails, always make sure the ATV has had a chance to warm up. If riding on roads where salt
is used, protect the undercarriage and metal components with a rust inhibitor.
Formula 4-Stroke® Power Sports Synthetic Motor Oil
The broad 0W-40 viscosity rating of AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke® Power Sports Synthetic Motor Oil (AFF)
provides the ultimate extreme temperature protection for ATV engines and transmissions, ensuring easy cranking, excellent
cold weather starting and quick post-startup protection in the coldest winter climates.
Propylene Glycol Antifreeze and Engine Coolant
AMSOIL Propylene Glycol Antifreeze and Engine Coolant (ANT) provides maximum
antifreeze and cooling protection in the most extreme temperatures and operating conditions.
Heavy Duty Metal Protector
AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector (AMH) is excellent as an undercoating,
protecting metal surfaces exposed to the damaging effects of salt, moisture or chemical corrosion.

The Increased Popularity of Flex Fuel Vehicles
About six million flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) are currently on U.S. roads. Capable of running on either gasoline or E85, a
blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, FFVs have been receiving considerable attention in recent years. The
benefits of E85 include its renewability, its ability to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and its ability to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. The drawbacks are reduced fuel efficiency compared to gasoline and lack of E85 pumps across the
nation. Less than 1 percent of the nation's gas stations offer E85.
The U.S. Department of Energy reports that 90 to 95 percent of all ethanol produced in the U.S. is made from corn.
However, the future holds the possibility of using the cellulose from agricultural wastes, known as cellulosic ethanol.
Cellulosic ethanol would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 70 percent, while also delivering four to 10 times the
energy provided by ethanol produced from corn.
Nearly 70 vehicle models from 1999 to 2007 have the capability of running on E85, including models from DaimlerChrysler,
Ford, General Motors, Isuzu, Mazda, Mercedes, Mercury and Nissan. Flex Fuel Vehicles are usually labeled as such on the fuel
cap area.
AMSOIL synthetic motor oils provide unsurpassed protection, performance and fuel
efficiency in flex fuel vehicles and conventional vehicles.

Oil Storage Tips
Noria Corporation offers the following safety tips for oil storage areas:
• Place fire extinguishers throughout the oil room and ensure they are inspected and tested regularly.
• Promptly clean up spills.
• Place used rags and absorbents in approved containers immediately after use, and empty the containers at the end of
each shift.
• Ensure oil houses are well ventilated.
• Rest solvents in a grounded surface to prevent static electricity sparks.
|
Gearbox Tip
According to Clint Del Valle, reliability leader at Honeywell, gearboxes in inaccessible or unsafe locations make finding
leaks very difficult. "If available, use an infrared camera to look for leaking seals, breathers or plugs," he says. "These
thermal images will show hot oil or grease oozing from the source."

The Growing Diesel Performance Market
The increased popularity of diesel engines has increased demand for performance parts and accessories.
Surveys reveal that public perception of diesel engines has improved in recent years. A recent TechnoMetrica Market
Intelligence survey showed 51 percent of respondents believe modern diesel engines are not the under-performing vehicles
they once were, and 50 percent agree diesel engines are more fuel efficient than gasoline engines. In addition, respondents
revealed they are willing to pay up to $1,700 extra for better fuel efficiency in a vehicle. This is significant because
diesel engine options for light-duty passenger cars typically cost between $1,000 and $1,500 more than standard gasoline
engines.
|
A growing number of publications are providing positive press for diesel engines, while an increasing
number of companies in the diesel performance market are advertising in these magazines.
|
Gale Banks of Gale Banks Engineering predicts the diesel market share for cars and 1/2- ton pickups will grow to 16 to 18
percent over the next 15 years. The media has played a role in helping the public become receptive to diesel engines as
performance-capable alternatives to gasoline engines. A growing number of publications are providing positive press for
diesel engines, while an increasing number of companies in the diesel performance market are advertising in these magazines.
In fact, the total number of advertising pages purchased by performance diesel companies in Diesel Power magazine
soared 330 percent between 2005 (134 pages) and 2006 (577 pages).
As diesel engines have become cleaner, quieter and more powerful over the past several years, a surge is becoming evident
in the heavy-duty diesel pickup and light-duty diesel vehicle performance markets. According to a SEMA Automotive Lifestyles
survey of diesel enthusiasts, the top three specialty equipment performance part purchases in 2006 were exhaust kits, air
intake performance air filter replacements and cold air intake conversions. Reported purchases of performance air filters
increased from 38.5 percent in 2005 to 50.1 percent in 2006, while purchases of cold air intake conversions more than
doubled from 20.5 percent in 2005 to 45.6 percent in 2006.
The survey also reveals a growing number of these consumers are turning to the internet to purchase parts and
accessories. These internet purchases have come largely at the expense of custom shop/installers, with 17 percent of
respondents reporting purchasing from a custom shop/installer, down from 36 percent in 2005.

Oil Leak Tip
According to Craig Palculict, Georgia Pacific lube/hydraulic oil analyst, oil leaks on large machines can be difficult to
locate. "When the oil level in the reservoir drops but no puddles appear, look for a leak that is running directly into a
u-drain or other sewer openings. If you use oil coolers and the oil pressure is higher than the water pressure, disconnect
the water side of the cooler, turn on the oil pumps and see if oil drains from the water lines, indicating a blown
cooler."
|
Determine Wear Rates
According to Noria Corporation, wear rates can be estimated by inspecting magnetic plugs and chip collectors in system
tanks and return lines at regular intervals. "One of the advantages of using magnetic chip collectors is the fact that the
particles are usually presented in the original shape and size. Otherwise, these particles tend to get reworked by the
moving elements, crushing them into smaller unidentifiable sizes."

Consumers Spending More Online
According to a recent report from Decision Direct Research, consumers are spending more money online due in part to a
desire to save gas. The survey of 55,000 customers indicated that 19 percent have significantly increased online spending
over the past year, while another 39 percent have slightly increased online spending over the past year. When asked for
reasons why they increased their online spending, "saves gas" showed an increase of 13 points over 2006 and "saves time"
showed an increase of six points. Other survey findings indicate a decrease in the use of search engines, bookmarks and
consumers entering web addresses directly. However, the number of survey respondents indicating they visited a website as
the result of receiving an e-mail promotion increased from 45 percent in 2005 to 62 percent in 2007.

Catch Problems Early
Caterpillar reports that catching a problem before it causes a failure can save a significant amount of money. "Catching
a problem before failure results in repair costs of 5 - 25 percent of the engine value. Catching after failure causes
repairs of more than 65 percent of the engine value."
Hose Tip
According to Noria Corporation, disconnected hoses should always be capped during maintenance. "It is surprising how much
debris can enter an open pipe. This will find its way into the system in short order, causing accelerated wear."

European Oil for European Vehicles
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 European Car Formula surpasses the requirements of the most stringent European motor oil
specifications.
Motor oil and motor oil specifications are quite different between the United States and Europe. Due to government
corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) requirements, U.S. motor oil specifications place more importance on fuel economy.
European specifications place more emphasis on engine protection due to the longer recommended oil drain intervals in
Europe. Differences between American and European vehicle designs also affect the requirements placed on motor oils.
European vehicles tend to be equipped with smaller engines with higher power densities, while American vehicles are larger
and have larger displacement engines.
|
Offering motor oils that fulfill European OEM specifications gives retail outlets and quick lubes a
distinct advantage over their competition, allowing them to reach a new segment of customers and increase sales.
|
The American Petroleum Institute (API) has one current motor oil specification for gasoline engines and another for
diesel engines, while the European ACEA system has multiple light duty oil specifications for gasoline and diesel engines.
Individual automotive manufacturers select one of the specifications and usually add their own stringent requirements. When
an oil is approved by a specific manufacturer, it is simply added to the manufacturer's approved list.
Due to the high motor oil quality standards, both motor oil prices and recommended drain intervals are substantially
higher in Europe than in the U.S. Typical oil drain intervals are between 10,000 and 18,000+ miles and an oil change can
cost hundreds of dollars. Since each manufacturer has its own specific motor oil requirements, most consumers bring their
vehicles to the dealer for oil changes.
Using conventional American motor oils in European vehicles will usually not fulfill that vehicle's requirements.
Therefore, offering motor oils that fulfill European OEM specifications gives retail outlets and quick lubes a distinct
advantage over their competition, allowing them to reach a new segment of customers and increase sales.
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 European Car Formula
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 European Car Formula (AFL) is specially
formulated for the lubrication needs of most modern European gasoline and diesel cars and light trucks. Formulated with
advanced synthetic base stocks, premium additives and a 5W-40 viscosity rating, Synthetic European Car Formula is the
preferred oil for nearly all European automobiles. It is one of the only oils in North America to be recommended for the
latest specifications of all three major European automakers – Volkswagen (Audi), BMW and Mercedes-Benz, as well as
the latest North American API specification.
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 European Car Formula is formulated to surpass the most demanding European specifications. It is
recommended for European and North American gasoline or diesel vehicles requiring any of the following worldwide
specifications:
• API SM/CF
• ACEA C3-04

Hybrid Scooters on the Way
Piaggio SpA recently announced plans to launch a gas-electric hybrid scooter model in congested cities. "The hybrid can
represent a very important reply to the problems of traffic, safety and pollution," said Piaggio SpA Chairman Roberto
Colaninno. "The hybrid generates synergies from the two motors, using electronic systems." Equipped with a 125cc gas engine,
the planned model is based on the Piaggio three-wheeled MP3 scooter and is expected to receive 169 mpg. A lithium battery is
used to power the electric motor, and it can be recharged either at the owner's home or through the gas engine when it is
running. According to officials, lithium batteries are lighter than conventional lead batteries and can be recharged several
thousand times.
|
Reservoir Breather Tip
According to Noria Corporation, the presence of steam rising from a reservoir breather typically signifies a problem. The
company recommends determining whether it is vapor or steam by placing a mirror over the breather. "Fogging of the mirror
generally confirms steam. This could be due to exceptionally high operating temperatures and a sudden ingress of water into
the fluid. Another problem to be concerned about is foam coming out of the vent. This is a serious condition, suggesting key
properties of the oil have changed sharply. There are many causes of foam formation relating to contamination, defoamant
additive, oil degradation, oil level and mixed lubricants."
