A Look Inside the
Motorcycle Oil Study:
Motorcycles are very popular vehicles that inspire tremendous brand loyalty. Many motorcyclists invest a great deal of
time and energy into their machines and spare no expense when it comes to the protection and performance of their
investments. With nearly five million registered motorcycles in the United States and sales topping 750,000 units annually,
the potential market for motorcycle products is almost limitless.
The AMSOIL Motorcycle Oil Study (PDF- opens a new window) is an
excellent source of information on the requirements of Motorcycle Motor Oil and how the different brands of Motorcycle Oils
perform in the tests required by Motorcycle manufacturers.
Requirements for Motorcycle Oils
Motorcycle Oils have unique requirements set by the manufacturers that differ in some ways from other types of motoroil.
Motorcycle engines and transmissions can sit up for periods of time and develop water contamination from condensation. This
can lead to rusting which can eventually lead to equipment failure. For more information on Motorcycle Rust Testing and how the different brands rated

Motorcycle Oils
Another difference in Motorcycle Oil formulation is the reduction of the friction modifiers for wet clutch compatibility.
This can lead to increase engine and transmission wear. AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils do not allow excessive wear in
engines and transmissions as noted by the 4 Ball Wear
Test (ASTM D-4172) results.
Gear Wear
Protection
How well do the major brands of Motorcycle Oil protect transmission gears? In many motorcycles the same lubricant lubricates
transmission gears as well as the internal engine components. Many brands that faired well in the 4 Ball Wear Test did not
perform well in the Gear Wear Test (ASTM D-5182 FZG).
Benefits of the two new AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils include:
· Improved Transmission Protection
· Excellent Wet Clutch Performance
· Excellent Corrosion Protection
· Outstanding Heat Resistance
· Robust Additive Levels
· Excellent Value for Cost Effective Performance
The new AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic
Motorcycle Oil (MCV) is recommended for Harley-Davidson, Buell, Victory, Ducati, BMW, Aprilla and Triumph
motorcycles calling for a 15W-50 or 20W-50 viscosity.
The new AMSOIL 10W-40 Synthetic
Motorcycle Oil (MCF) is recommended for Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Husqvarna and KTM motorcycles calling
for a 10W-40 or 20W-40 viscosity.
Available in quarts, cases, 30 gallon and 55 gallon drums. For more detailed information on these new oils, visit:
